Freakonomics, a non-fiction book that's wrote by Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner. Levitt is an expert economist and Dubner is an American journalist. The book Freakonomics has talk about 6 topics that are interesting because they have included evidences by having charts, articles, quotes, real life survey and experiences, etc. However, their main point is about the world is "Economics is, at root, the study of incentives: how people want or need the same thing. Economists love incentives. They love to dream them up and enact them, study them and tinker with them." In these topics, it's kind of like he's debating because of the topic and the details. The whole book is full of interesting facts and I think it's engaging book and it comes with surprises because when you keep reading farther and farther, you'll see more unexpected information and you won't imagine this can be really happening unless you have already research it. For me, I got engaged by seeing the cover page says, "A rogue economist explores the hidden side of everything "Prepare to be dazzled""
I think the purpose of this book is mostly about how economies affect things and giving out their ideas and tell us interesting facts that we would never imagine or have a deep thought about it. This goal is achieved well because I learned a lot from the book and I've already getting surprise for a few times. It's hard to having a few topics to relate to each other but people can tells that the author didn't just pull random debatable topics and write more about it.
I like these three topics the most, "What do schoolteachers and sumo wrestlers have in common?" "Why do drug dealers still live with their moms?" "What makes a perfect parent?". The common idea about them is about it's all started with economies, which I think it's a true fact and it's affecting many people in there. At the two chapter of "What makes a perfect parents?", it gives out a few evidences to support his point and he usually gives point step by step, which you don't have to load everything just once, Although he's doing like this, you still need to think, to explore more things and have your own comments and ideas about this topic that you're being curious on.
Author had a short introduction on economic when it's the first chapter. When I was reading along, I didn't know why is economic can be related to the common thing between school teacher and sumo wrestler, more like to say, I didn't think it can be related at all. It started off using a bit intros, than it get farther and tell you more about his thoughts about cheating as the common thing between these 2 careers. This quote is an important point on explaining how teacher's a important fact, "But if a teacher really wanted to cheat-and make it worth her while-she might collect her students' answer sheets and, in the hour or so before turning them in to be read by an electronic scanner, erase the wrong answers and fill in correct ones." When I got to this page, I started to think it's really possible because it would happens because the economy is bad and people is losing jobs and the percentage of people being unemployed is higher than the old times. Without a job, it's going to be horrible deal to no incomes, and having supplies that you need to use daily, you can't live without having a job. After giving out more information about teacher can be cheating at students' test, author than tells sport players can be cheating by having special pills, other medicines or other ways to cheat.
As I've repeated how I can tell the style of the author's writing, I like this kind of writing. It's good to learn from book, especially these kind of book with that much of information with some own thoughts. Another part of my favorite of the book is when it tells about perfect parenting. At first, he tells about fear is the major problem to force a parent to not be an expert. He said, "No one is more susceptible to an expert's fear-mongering than a parent. Fear is in fact a major component of the act of parenting. A parent, after all, is the steward of another creature's life, a creature who in the beginning is more helpless than the newborn of nearly any other species. This leads a lot of parents to spend a lot of their parenting energy simply being scared." Having a introduction about how he thinks what affect parenting, than tell more about his thought with some research to support his sentence or paragraph. Than he use a real life example to let people understand and have a higher chance to agree with him because people believes in others if they tell things clearly, voice that sound they've tested it with researches, real life experiences, etc. Author gave out an example on this girl calls Molly, her parents made her to keep staying on her best friend's house and have her taken care of and be safe. They're feared to get her daughter to get hurt, and they thought this is the best way of their daughter not being harmed by others people. However, there's a swimming pool at the backyard of this house, although Molly's parents think the parent of Amy's has a gun and it'll be fine. But it turns out that swimming pool is more dangerous than a gun actually does by surveys and records. There are others evidences as well to have his idea being highly supported, it seems like Freakonomics is a nice book to let you learn things, as the cover page said, "Prepare to be dazzled."
